Oral Systemic Connection
A systemic connection is when a condition, such as gum disease, can impact many other organs, tissues, and existing health conditions. Research has shown that gum disease has been linked to heart disease and diabetes. Systemic connections can go both ways, but its main issue is how it impacts the body’s ability to fight off infections. We’ll discuss more the connection between gum disease and overall health issues.
Heart Disease
Inflammation, which is a shared symptom of both gum disease and heart disease, can be diminished through proactive treatment. The inflammation that impacts gum tissue can reach the bloodstream and impact blood vessels as well. This can cause inflammation and build-up in the blood vessels, leading to the potential for a stroke or heart attack. Patients who are smokers have a higher risk of developing both heart disease and gum disease than nonsmokers. Heart disease does not cause gum disease, despite this shared factor of inflammation.
Diabetes
Diabetes and gum disease have a two-way connection that makes their link important to control. Research has shown patients with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease than those who are otherwise healthy. Gum disease and its inflammation can impact a diabetic patient’s ability to regulate glucose levels, leaving them susceptible to harmful bacteria. This allows for gum disease and other oral health issues to develop. Diabetics already need to balance blood sugar levels, and if they already develop gum disease, it can be more difficult to treat it properly. If they can control their glucose levels, it decreases the risk of gum disease and further complications from diabetes.
Gum disease is the inflammation of gum tissue due to a buildup of tartar underneath and at the gum line. This disease is characterized by bleeding gums, receding gum lines, and even tooth loss. Preventing gum disease is as easy as following proper oral health care practices and visiting the dentist twice annually.
